There remains one constant in life that, according to my observation at least, never changes and that is the inevitability of change itself. Does that make any sense? Think about it folks - the earth is forever in a state of change and has been since day one and so too the people who inhabit it past, present and future if, in fact, we get that far. Walk down the side street of the neighborhood you grew up on: The corner store, the homes and the people who lived there, the activities that took place, it has all changed. There are most likely only remnants of what used to be. Those who live there now will, without a doubt, face those same changes someday. And so life goes on and on, and so on. Nothing stays the same, there is always something else and there is always what used to be.
Look at what many of us do in an attempt to, if not turn back the hands of time, then at least to try to look as though we did. There’s nothing wrong with hanging on to your youthful exuberance for as long as possible. At a funeral service, the vocabulary of the afternoon never fails to surface. In a whisper is heard, someone commenting on how good the deceased looks. What I’m trying to say is that by then those compliments vaporize into thin air unless you’re talking to the Undertaker who’ll appreciate the gesture. Look and feel good now and accept those compliments with open arms. Any way … where was I? Oh yea, change! I for one can honestly say that for me coping with change is an uphill battle of which I’ll never make it to the top unless someone carries me. Case in point; I recently decided, after a long stint on the side lines, to make a comeback bid on the racing circuit, foot racing that is. There was a time when I could run a 10k in under 40 minutes. Today, instead of a stop watch, they need a calendar to log my time. I find myself having to turn around and wait for my legs to catch up with me. In my quest to hit the comeback trail I found myself facing an indomitable opponent, time! Time did not stand still - it waited for me at the finish line next to its partner in crime, change. The attempt was worth it, since it got me back into reasonable shape and I kind of liked myself for getting there …eventually.
Nothing stays the same be it for the better or the worse. It depends on where we happen to be standing at the time. A strong wind gust blew down a tree that was blocking the home owner’s view of the goings on across the street. A stroke of luck for the homeowner, not so for the poor soul who happened to be standing under it. No folks, change is not always fair and many are the occasions when we don’t see it coming. Ask any pugilist and they’ll tell you that it’s the punch they don’t see coming that does the most damage. In everyday life, all we can do is to be aware of change and to “bob and weave” our way through, so at least we have a better chance of going the distance on our feet. We may not see change coming but it behooves us to know it’s coming.
I’m just saying! Everything and everyone is subject to change. Nothing is how we remember it. We leave for a few minutes and it’s different. Not the way we left it. Someone or something isn’t there anymore. Like my loving Dad said to me after he succumbed to male pattern baldness…”Hair today gone tomorrow.” Say no more.
It’s so true ❤️
